Safiya Franklin MBBS, DM(Orthopaedic Surgery)
Dr. Safiya A. Franklin is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Sports Medicine Practitioner. Dr. Franklin has been in medical practice since 2002 and practising Sports Medicine since 2004. She has the distinction of being the first female trained Jamaican in the Orthopaedic Surgery training programme at the University of the West Indies and is currently the Head of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at the May Pen Hospital, having started the service there in 2017. She is a certified Football Medicine Instructor (FIFA), certified Team Physician (AOSSM & ACSM) and has been athlete and team physician at local and international meets/tournaments of various National Sports Associations and Federations including the Jamaica Football Federation's male U-17, U20, U-23 and female teams. Dr. Franklin is also experienced in sports administration and event management, and was appointed co-Head of the Medical Delegation to the Pan-Am Games, Rio de Janeiro as well as Medical Director for the Local Organising Committee for the CONCACAF U-17 Final Qualifying Round and Red-Stripe Champions Cup. Dr. Franklin is a published author in her specialty of orthopaedics and has additional training in foot and ankle surgery from the Guys' and St. Thomas' Hospitals in the UK. She has been mentored by renowned Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Surgeon Dr. Answorth Allen, Team Orthopaedist New York Knicks, at the Hospital for Special Surgery, NY and Prof. Tim Briggs, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, UK in Cartilage Transplant/ Joint Reconstruction techniques. She has given several lectures and presentations in the areas of orthopaedics as well as sports medicine locally. She has been an active member of the JASM, having held several positions in the Association, including Assistant Treasurer of the Central Chapter, Vice President of the JASM and now its Honorary Secretary. Dr. Franklin holds memberships in several associations locally and internationally in the areas of both Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine.
